Hijab

 A hijab is not meant to be merly a piece of cloth covering the hair. Some sisters feel that just because they have their hair covered they have fulfilled the requirements of the hijab. However, they fail to realize that the hijab is much more then only covering the hair.In fact, the hijab requires covering the whole body and is also a way of life, its the way you talk, the way you walk, the way you carry yourself.

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their head covers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.(Surat-un-Nur 24:31)

This verse clearly illustrates that the hijab must cover their neck and chest areas, which clearly prohibits the new trend of 'turban hijabs', which reveal the neck and chest areas. This verse also clearly outlines that women are not suppose to expose their adornment to non-mehran men which means that our hijabs should be fully covering all our body parts and we should not adorn ourselves with make-up, jewellery, etc in front of non-mehram men.


*TIGHT AND/OR REVEALING CLOTHING MUST NOT BE WORN WITH HIJAB* 

Additionally, women should not wear tight/revealing clothing which outlines the shape of their body. Many sisters cover the hair, but they excessively adorn themselves and wear tight revealing clothing which defeats the purpose of the hijab. This means that tight jeans, t-shirts and other revealing clothing cannot be worn with the hijab.  

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said,

“There are two types of the people of Hell whom I have not seen: men with whips like the tails of cattle with which they strike the people, and women who are clothed but naked, walking with an enticing gait, with something like the humps of camels on their heads. They will not enter Paradise nor even smell its fragrance, and its fragrance can be smelled from such and such a distance” (Muslim)*

This hadith illustrates that although women who wear tight clothing are dressed, but in reality they are naked because they clothes are revealing their figure.
  
*Perfume and Hijab*

Women are not allowed to wear perfume in front of non mehram men, as the wearing of perfume is an adornment.  

“Any woman who puts on perfume and passes by people so that they can smell her fragrance, is an adulteress.” (al-Nasaa’i, Tirmidhi: hasan by Albaani)

And it was narrated that Zaynab, the wife of ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood, said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to us: “If one of you attends the mosque, let her not put on perfume.” Narrated by Muslim (443). 

Therefore, the hijab is much more they merly covering the hair. It requires that we cover our awrah and beauty in front of non mehram men, which prohibits us from adorning ourselves. We must remember that the hijab is much more that a piece of cloth covering our hair. Wearing tight revealing clothes, and beautifying ourselves are not part of the hijab and thus we must refrain from beautifying ourselves in front of non mehram men.
